About our presenters:
Dr Calum MacRae
Dr. Calum MacRae is the Chief of Cardiovascular Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. His research interest is in understanding the fundamental mechanisms of disease using human studies and complementary efforts combining systems level modeling with empiric high-throughput biology in the zebrafish. Under his leadership, the Brigham Cardiology team has successfully engaged in a number of innovative collaborations in cardiovascular care optimization with a wide range of industry partners.
In October 2016, Dr. MacRae became the recipient of One Brave Idea, a $75 million 5-year research award to study coronary heart disease and its consequences. His proposal was chosen amongst a group of 349 applicants from 22 countries who sought the project to identify an entirely new approach to eradicate the number one killer of Americans. His visionary approach holds promise for addressing a broad set of diseases. Read Calum’s full bio.
Dr Ziad Obermeyer
Dr. Ziad Obermeyer is a physician and researcher who works at the intersection of machine learning and health. His research seeks to understand and improve decision making in public policy and clinical medicine, and drive innovations in health research. His research is supported by the National Institutes of Health, the Robert Wood Johnson, the World Bank Group, and the Laura and John Arnold Foundation.
Dr. Obermeyer holds a BA (magna cum laude) from Harvard and an MPhil from Cambridge, where he was a Frank Knox fellow in the history and philosophy of science. He worked as a consultant to pharmaceutical and global health clients at McKinsey & Co. in New Jersey, Geneva, and Tokyo before returning to Harvard for his MD (magna cum laude). While a medical student, he worked as a full-time research scientist at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
